The lower portion of the smaller of the three interlinked bronze pieces is just in reach of an adult, and it was designed to allow people to brush a hand against it - providing constant human contact and creating an attractive burnished patina to that part of the memorial. The memorial was unveiled by the Premier of New South Wales, Bob Carr, on the first anniversary of the bombing on 12th October 2003. A memorial service for the bombing victims has been held there each year since.
NSW Place of Reflection
Nearby is a sandstone wall and plaque that overlooks Coogee Beach and has the names of all 43 New South Wales victims of the bombing. It also includes the name of the one Tasmanian
victim, Tim Hawkings; there is no Tasmanian memorial. His name is on a small plaque to the right of the main plaque and was added later. The names on the memorial are:

Eastern Suburbs Memorial
In 2005, at the request of local victims' families a plaque with the names and photographs of each of the 20 victims from the eastern suburbs
was dedicated in April, 2003 on the remnant portico from the Giles Baths. The original plaque only included the victims' names, but later a small
photographic portraits and ages were added. The plaque reads:
IN MEMORY. On Saturday 12th October 2002, Kuta Beach on the Indonesian island of Bali, a popular holiday destination for generations of Australians was shattered by a terrorist attack. The horrific bombing claimed the lives of hundreds of innocent people, including 88 Australians. Sydney's Eastern Suburbs were devastated by the tragic loss of twenty local residents and injuries to many more. The community of the City of Randwick remembers all the victims and dedicates this site to those local residents who lost their lives. Dedicated on 12 April 2003.

Dophins Point
The 12th April, 2003 was the six month anniversary of the bombing. On that day the point above Giles Baths on the Northern headland of was officially named "Dolphins Point"
by NSW Premier Bob Carr in memory of the six Coogee Dolphins footballers who were killed in the bombings. Confusingly, sometimes the "s" is dropped and the point is sometimes referred to as "Dolphin Point".
But the correct name is "Dolphins" after the footballers, not the marine specie. A plaque mounted on a square sandstone plinth reads:
Dolphins Point This headland named in memory of the six Coogee Dolphins A Grade Amateur Rugby League players who were among those tragically killed in Kuta, Bali on the 12th October 2002.
Coogee Dolphins
The common foundation of any great club is spirit and, like the game they played, a Dolphin`s spirit never dies. They will always be remembered and loved by their families, friends and the community in which they lived. Dedicated on 12th April 2008. |
