HISTORY | STORIES | BEYOND BLOG & CREATE PEOPLE |
Crown seals or corks are collected by people around the world who admire the variety of designs and relative ease of storage. Even though they are highly disposable items, the designs on each of the crown seals are attractive little pieces of commercial art. My fascination with them is that I see them reflecting a little of the culture and history of the place from which they originated. Even though they are usually casually thrown away after the opening of a bottle, their designs still tend to be fresh and interesting.
My interest in them was sparked while traveling overseas. I started picking up and keeping attractive ones as souvenirs, but so pervasive are they, lying around on streets and in parks, that seeing novel designs in new settings, made me look at them with a fresh view. Look at them closely and each one is a little piece of art. These representations of commercial art, I think, tells a little about the community in which they are produced and sold.
They are free and plentiful, and within a few minutes of picking some up, you will have a collection! Below examples of some crown seals I have picked up in Coogee and in my travels further afield.
