The CBD and South East Light Rail between Sydney City and Randwick, route L2, is likley to officially open to public passenger traffic on December 14th, 2019. The line to Kingsford will open in March 2020.
Eastern Suburbs Railway
Just over 40 years ago, the Eastern Suburbs Railway from Sydney City to Bondi Junction opened in July 1979. It was origianlly planned that it should continue on to Charling Cross, then Randwick, pass the UNSW, and terminate at Kingsford, but it was shortened by the newly elected Wran Government in 1976 to terminate at Bondi Junction. You can read a copy of a 16 page pamphlet issued in 1979 to commemorate the railway's opening here. Had the railway been built, as orignally planned, there may not have been a need for the CBD and South East Light Rail.
Commemorative Pamphlet from 1979By the way, if you travel between and Edgecliff and Bondi Junction stations on the Eastern Suburbs Railway, the train emerges for a brief half-minute into an open cutting at Woollahra passing empty station platforms. This was planned to be a Woollahra railway station but was abandoned when the 1976 review was implemented.
Celebrating the Opening of Light Rail
When the first passenger carrying light rail train pulls into Randwick Station, the L2 route, what will it be like? Perhaps the State Government will just cut a ribbon at Circular Quary and send a train on its way! We reckon it will be much more elaborate. We have a fantasy view of a tram, decked in colourful bunting, pulling into Randwick with a smiling, waving state Premier Gladys Berejiklian hanging of the doorway of the driver's cabin. Yes, cinematic-style nonsense - but Coogee Media hopes to be there with our cameras to record whatever happens.L3 passenger services between Circular Quay and Juniors Kingsford commenced operations on 3 April 2020 and opened quietly amidst the prioritisation of government aid for the ongoing coronavirus pandemic during the period
You can watch a Coogee Media YouTube video, below, of the testing and driver training of the light rail from the corner of Alison and Wansey Roads, Randwick
